Stephan Bulmer - Bachelor of Music Performace (Classical)
Born in the UK, my early musical experiences revolved around the recorder at Primary school and piano at High school; however, with hindsight I realise that the most significant experience was being a chorister in St. Michael’s church from the age of seven to fifteen. During this period I sang soprano, alto and bass. I had an early inclination to play the violin but this was not possible at the time; however, having experienced the harmonic richness of the piano it was a natural transition to the guitar. The appeal of the sound of the guitar lay in its infinite range of tone.
I migrated to Australia as a young man and was fortunate to meet Dr. Peter Calvo of the Sydney Spanish Guitar Centre with whom I studied for many years. I was also greatly inspired and helped by the Adelaide based guitarist Jason Waldron. During the 70’s and 80’s I attended various Summer schools, Master classes and intensive courses with famous guitarists from overseas. In the 1990’s I graduated from the West Australian Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelors degree in performance of Classical music
I have been involved professionally with music since the early 1970’s fulfilling various roles as performer, studio teacher and lecturer in tertiary institutions. I particularly like performing solo or accompanying singers. I have always had an interest in lutherie (guitar making) and have made a few instruments for the University.
I was in Darwin since 1997 where I have taught at the Centre for Youth Music and have lectured in guitar, music history and musicianship for the Charles Darwin University.
I retired from the University last year and have moved to Beechworth with my family where I am planning to build guitars and perform as opportunities arise.
