Sok Yi Bulmer
(Bachelor of Music Teaching, Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning)
I grew up, studied and worked in Singapore before moving to Darwin in 2000. Amid the fast paced and busy lifestyle in Singapore, Classical guitar has always been my means of relaxation and solace from the busy world. My desire to be a more accomplished musician brought me to Darwin, where Classical Guitar activities were flourishing under the leadership of Dr. Adrian Walter, (himself a professional guitarist) who was then the head of music department in Charles Darwin University and also the founder and organiser of the series of successful Darwin International Guitar Festivals.
I studied the Bachelor of Music Teaching Degree in Darwin. Apart from the performing opportunities (as a soloist or with other musicians) I also started teaching children music (individual classical guitar lessons, guitar ensembles, junior music program). My role has mainly been a tutor to individual or a group of students. Since 2000, I have taught extensively in several schools in Darwin and also in the Centre for Youth Music in Charles Darwin University.
I have successfully taught Primary School children Classical Guitar, music reading skills and formed ensembles who have won in Eisteddfod competitions and have performed regularly in school and community events. But more importantly, I take pride in helping children enjoy music, discover the joy of playing the Classical Guitar and enjoy the journey of learning.
Apart from teaching children Classical guitar, I also enjoy making music with the little ones in my junior music programs. I first started running junior music program in Centre for Youth Music in 2002 and since then have been providing such programs to my children's childcare centre and schools. Since becoming a qualified classroom teacher, I have often included music and movement in the early childhood classes, which gives a different dimension to the students' curriculum.
I completed the Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (in Charles Darwin University) in November 2012 and am a registered teacher in the Northern Territory and Victoria. In 2013, I have worked regularly as a relief teacher (in all grades) and a contract teacher (Foundation year Teacher, Special Education Teacher and Year 3/4 Science Teacher).
Growing up and having an education in Singapore has enabled me to be bilingual. Since becoming a registered teacher, I have also taught in Darwin Languages Centre as a Mandarin junior Class Teacher (for 4 to 8 years old).
Our family moved to Beechworth in 2014 and I look forward to developing young musicians and bilingual children in this region.
